Engine Repair for Euro Cars in Franklin, MA

Engines can last seemingly forever if you provide timely maintenance for them. However, certain components that are on or that control the engine can wear out or malfunction. Sensors, gaskets, plugs, and more can fail and cause the engine to run poorly, if at all. Advanced European Repair in Franklin, MA, provides engine repair when those components fail. Drivers come to us from Franklin and nearby Mendon when a repair is beyond what a general shop can handle.

Signs of Engine Problems

In many cases, the malfunctioning component only causes poor engine behavior instead of shutting it down completely. When this happens, it’s imperative that you don’t push the engine. Rather than take a chance of causing additional damage, tow the vehicle to Advanced European Repair for diagnosis and repair. A small oil leak ignored today becomes a big bill later, a message we repeat often to our Bellingham and Milford customers.

Signs you may need engine repair include:

Engine warning light on dashboard

Check Engine Light

When the check engine light comes on, the electronic control module (ECM) stores a code because it cannot correct the out-of-range readings it received from one of the sensors. While it is often something minor, there are some cases when the problem is major. If the issue is catastrophic, the ECM can cause the engine to go into “limp home” mode. The engine will give you just enough power to limp a couple of miles to your auto tech or home or until you can get off the highway. In most cases, once you shut the vehicle off, it won’t start again.

Loss of Power

Many malfunctions can cause your vehicle to have a decrease in power, including ignition issues and fuel issues. Emissions and exhaust issues can also cause loss of power.

Noises

If you hear the engine tapping, knocking or rattling, shut it off immediately. These sounds usually signify internal damage, which only gets worse if you keep driving it.

Poor Fuel Efficiency

Your vehicle may experience a sudden drop in fuel efficiency. This signifies issues such as fuel system problems or a clogged engine air filter. It may also signify issues with one or more of the sensors or the electronic control module.

Excessive Smoke

Your vehicle can put out three colors of smoke. Generally, black smoke means the rings are worn, white smoke is a head gasket problem, and gray smoke is a fuel-related problem.

Some of the engine repair services we offer at AER include:

  • Valve cover gaskets often dry out or tear after many miles, allowing engine oil down the side of the engine and onto components and the exhaust manifold.
  • Head gaskets can break, causing the vehicle to overheat. Depending on where the break is, coolant could get into the cylinder and oil pan, or exhaust gases could get into the coolant. If you pull the oil dipstick and the oil looks milky or the coolant bubbles while the engine is running, you most likely have a broken head gasket. Another sign is white smoke coming from the tailpipe.
  • Timing chains and timing belts ride under the timing cover on the front of the engine. They keep the valves and pistons timed so they don’t hit each other. Timing chains often last over 100,000 miles, but most timing belts require replacement at around 60,000 miles. Your owner’s manual will tell you when to replace the timing belt. A broken timing belt could cause catastrophic engine damage.
  • When one of the sensors fails or senses out-of-range readings, AER has the diagnostic equipment to diagnose and repair the problem. When this happens, the ECM illuminates the check engine light on the dashboard to alert you there is a problem with the emissions system. On some vehicles, the ECM also controls other components, including the transmission.

We handle that work for Medway, Norfolk, and Foxborough owners day in and day out, and whether you’re in Mansfield or Attleboro, we’ll find the real problem and get you back on the road without guesswork.
