Transmission Services in Franklin, MA

When you want every gear change to be smooth, whether your vehicle has an automatic transmission or a manual transmission, you have to keep the transmission serviced. The transmission transfers power from the engine to the wheels. Ignoring transmission maintenance can significantly shorten the life of a transmission, especially in performance vehicles. Advanced European Repair in Franklin, MA, provides transmission services to keep your transmission in top-notch condition. A slipping or hard-shifting transmission is far cheaper to stay ahead of than to rebuild, which is why Franklin and Attleboro drivers bring theirs in early.

Signs of Transmission Problems

A transmission has tons of moving parts, so it does wear over time. Some of the common signs you may need transmission services include:

  • Clunking, whining, and grinding noises when you shift gears usually mean issues with the hard parts in the transmission. However, some shift kits can cause hard shifting that comes with a “clunk” as the transmission changes gears.
  • Slipping gears is when the transmission goes in and out of gears by itself. You may have a problem with the fluid, valve body, or even the transmission computer.
  • Delayed engagement can signify several issues, from low or dirty transmission fluid to problems with the computer or hard parts. You may also have a problem with the torque converter. If it’s from low transmission fluid, it is often more noticeable in reverse.
  • Fluid leaks can manifest from the pan itself, between the engine and transmission, or even in the cooler lines and transmission cooler.
  • Burning odors can happen when the transmission slips gears and often indicate that the transmission is overheating. Left alone, that can cause catastrophic damage.
  • Warning lights – either the check engine light or a transmission light – can signify issues with the transmission that require immediate diagnostics.

It’s a common concern for the Mendon and Milford owners we see, and we’ve saved plenty of Bellingham and Medway customers from major repairs by catching it early.

Clutch, Front Pump and Torque Converter Replacement

Automatic transmissions have clutches and clutch packs that allow you to shift gears. We can replace the clutch, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing, and pressure plate that is bolted to the flywheel. When replacing the clutch, we also check to see if the rear main seal on the engine is leaking. Automatic transmissions use torque converters in the bell housing. When a torque converter fails, you may hear a tinkling sound and have trouble shifting. We can replace torque converters. Finally, the front pump, which pumps the transmission fluid, can fail. We can also replace the pumps.

Transmission Fluid Flushes

Many shops just drain the transmission fluid. However, that doesn’t get it out of the torque converter and many other nooks and crannies. We flush the transmission, making sure we get all the old fluid out. We also change the filter and clean the transmission pan of metal shavings and other debris that builds up from clutch material and the gears wearing.

Transmission Inspections and Diagnostics

We have the diagnostic tools to identify issues with electronic transmissions. We also inspect the transmission for fluid leaks and issues with the shift linkage.
